The New Yorker piece is making the rounds. It was from a series of interviews with couples discussing their relationships. The one titled A Chicago Couple was, you guessed it, about the Obamas.
These are my two favorite quotes, one from each of them...
Barack has helped me loosen up and feel comfortable with taking risks, not doing things the traditional way and sort of testing it out, because that is how he grew up. I’m more traditional; he’s the one in the couple that, I think, is the less traditional individual. You can probably tell from the photographs—he’s just more out there, more flamboyant. You don't hear him described as flamboyant much these days, old Mr. Cool. But I get a sense of that every once in a while. Pretty interesting.
And him about her...
This one is totally obvious to me whenever I see them interviewed together. He often gets this look on his face that is like, "Wow-- she's with me? I still don't believe it. What an amazing lady." Like he is totally surprised by her. It is so romantic.
It’s that tension between familiarity and mystery that makes for something strong, because, even as you build a life of trust and comfort and mutual support, you retain some sense of surprise or wonder about the other person.
