La Vida Locavore has been keeping up with the Peanut Scandal and it is getting worse. Besides hundreds of new recalled products, and the facts surfacing that PCA knowingly shipped salmonella laden peanut paste-- it has come to light that they also had a problem with other icky stuff in their products AND they were caught red handed not by the FDA but by Canada in 2008!
Lots of new peanut butter news, although now it's probably more correct to call it peanut news because the problem has gone beyond peanut butter. Apparently a shipment of peanuts from that plant was rejected by Canada in Sept 2008. When they sent them back the FDA wouldn't allow them into America either because they contained "filthy, putrid or decomposed substance, or is otherwise unfit for food." That substance? Metal fragments.
Another bit of news: Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), the company that caused the problem, is now under a federal criminal investigation. Jill Richardson
In that same diary the ice cream recall list is sure to break every ice cream lover's heart.
PCA facing criminal charges. I certainly hope so. I say boil them in a vat of peanut paste and metal fragments. But remember you will not be able to ship the resulting product to Canada where they actually HAVE safety standards.
